Ear suction/microsuction can be performed for removing wax that have not responded to wax removal drops, and to aid the treatment of outer ear infections (otitis externa). It is performed with the aid of an operating microscope, through a small vacuum and sometimes with the aid of a curette.
It is a much safer alternative to ear syringing, with significantly less risk of pain, bleeding, infections, dizziness and perforation. A small number of people can find it uncomfortable or the noise bothersome, but largely it is well tolerated.
